3DSOM Pro 2.1

3DSOM Pro 2.1

So you've seen Papervision, Away3D and Sandy and that's impressive and all, but it's all so technical. If what you really want to do is just get a 3D model out on there in a fast and fashionable way, 3DSOM Pro could be a product for you.

Once in a while, we get press releases that actually contains news and this is one of those. Created by the british company Creative Dimension Software Ltd, 3DSOM is not only a way to view 3D models on the web, it's also a way to create the 3D models by the means of just plain photographs.

This is the process: find an object you want to put on the web, place it against an even colored background, shoot pictures while you rotate the object and load the images into 3DSOM Pro. The software will now make a textured model that you can save and export to a variety of formats (VRML, 3DS, Macromedia Shockwave3D). You can also export viewers that you can put straight onto the web by the means of either a high fidelity Java applet or a snappy and simple to use Flash viewer. If all you want to do is display objects in interactive 3D, this could be a perfect match. We've not tested the software yet, but we'd love to do it soon!
