Adobe to acquire Virtual Ubiquity, makers of Buzzword

Have you seen Buzzword? It's an online word processor created in Flex that not only does the basic stuff that Google Docs do, but also advanced WYSIWYG layouts. Today, Adobe announced that they are to acquire Virtual Ubiquity, the makers of this Flex application.

Some weeks ago, Dan Florio (the maker of video.Maru) blogged about what he thought would happen in the days to come. Adobe has already told a lot about the new features in Flex 3, but some weeks ago, Dan guessed that Adobe would buy the makers of the Buzzword online word processor.

And he was right. Virtual Ubiquity got some initial funding from Adobe's venture "arm" a little time ago. Apparently they figured that Buzzword had the potential to let them join a battle they recently said they would not enter? This is exciting times for Flash devs - you can make Flash apps that compete in a whole new league and then be acquired. This also makes a nice addition to Adobe's portfolio of "online applications" such as Photoshop Express and Premiere Express. We look forward to how these aquisitions will affect the ecosystem of developers.

Today and tomorrow are the big days this year, Adobe will show Flash Player 10 and a host of new tech at the Adobe MAX conference in Chicago. We're unable to attend this year, but we'll bring you the news as they unfold.
