Apollo Beta on Labs

Today, one day after the ApolloCamp, Adobe released the long awaited Alpha version of Adobe Apollo for anyone to test and play with.

Just in case you've missed out on what Apollo is, here's Adobe's explanation: "Apollo is the code name for a cross-operating system runtime being developed by Adobe that allows developers to leverage their existing web development skills (Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax) to build and deploy rich Internet applications (RIAs) to the desktop."

Said in another way, it's a way for Flash and Flex developers to create real desktop applications that can access the file system and do many things you cannot do with Flash today due to security restrictions. Other than the OS interaction, Apollo will contain some very unique features. It can mix and match Flash files, HTML files and PDF to create a whole new set of applications. A mouse click on an embedded HTML page can trigger events in a Flash file and vice versa. HTML pages can be treated just like any other object in Flash, so you can add transparency, blur it, rotate it and pretty much anything. We are expecting great things to be done with this new tool as it opens up a wide range of possibilities. It will also make several tasks much easier since you can now select technology (HTML or SWF) freely, depending on strengths and weaknesses.

Expect more about Apollo on Flashmagazine soon as we are now in Sydney, Australia to cover the WebDU conference where several of the sessions and the main keynote are about Apollo (with Mike Chambers & Mike Downey).
