FFilmation is a new isometric 3D game engine published as Open Source. The engine supports z-sorting, textures, lighting, realtime shadows, bumpmaps, basic physics for collision detection as well as custom events attached to tiles.
Flash keeps getting more powerful and with it comes the desire to do on the web what have formerly been done on the desktop. FFilmation is a bold attempt at isometric 3D on the web and it's impressive for a first release. At it's current stage, it could easily be adapted for virtually any kind of adventure game or maybe even a racing game? The engine only supports two basic shapes, boxes and cylinders but that'll take you quite far since the objects support textures as well.
The demo levels are quite small, but gives a good impression of what is possible. In isometric games, the levels are based on tiles. The FFilmation engine can detect tile collissions, movement and the entering and leaving of tiles. Combine this with sound and some dynamic lighting and you'll be able to create quite convincing environments. The engine supports some kinds of throtteling (click the tools icon on the demos) so you'll be able to adjust quality somewhat during playback. This could be done manually like in the demos, or automatically based on a users hardware configuration.
