Flip Boom, animation software for kids

Looking for an animation program for kids? ToonBoom has a new software that might be what you're looking for. With a simplified interface but enough features to be fun, Flip Boom should provide a cheap and easy start.

Priced at USD $29.99, Flip Boom isn't exactly expensive. It's full of features though: Brush, Brush size, Paint (fill), Color selector, Eraser, playback, speed, looping, Cut / Copy / Paste / Undo, a timeline plus a couple "advanced features" such as Paint Behind, Onion Skin and support for pressure sensitive tablets. That's about it, but it's also all that is required for simple animations.

The program is really quite fun to use, but one thing scared us for a second - if you click the "Delete frame" button, the frame is instantly gone without a warning. The software has an "all inclusive" multilevel undo function that will bring the frame back, but still a little scary. You can export the resulting animation as either QuickTime, Flash or AVI, just as in the more professional Toon Boom Studio.

Flip Boom is available for both Mac OSX and Windows. There's no physical box to buy, just an electronic download, but you can get a gift certificate with download instructions if you are giving this to someone. A trial version is also available, but it's limited to only 7 days.
