J:ACK and more

Extending Flash 5 using the Prototype function is popular. Branden Hall's project ACK is now the base of a new 'kit'of functions.

ACK (ActionScript Component Kit) was initially written by Branden Hall and has been extended by many other avid Flashers like Samuel Wan and Robert Penner. ACK is an event engine, but what is that then? It's a way of extending Flash, adding a collection of new events that Flash can respond to and adding new actionscript commands. Using these tools, you can relatively easily do stuff that would take hours, in just minutes. ACK and friends are mainly for programmers, but some of it is rather easy to use for non-programmers as well.

J:ACK is the latest tool in the collection. J:ACK provides a visual component infrastructure with functionality similar to what is provided by Java's Swing. This way of extending Flash is just the beginning and when the next version of Flash arrives we can expect these things to take off completely. Flashmaster.ru has gathered a pretty good collection of related links if you want to know more.
