Make Virtual Reality 360 Panoramas in Flash

Now this is pretty cool! Forget about QuickTime VR or Java applets that work only half the time. Use Flash for making VR tours instead and get the reach of the Flashplayer! Christian Stehle has made FlashVR - using Flash.

Using a combination of clever code, Flash and a third party Projector Tool, Christian has created FlashVR - an application that can take any panoramic image and create a Virtual tour using multiple scenes. Until we discovered this tool, we've only seen Quicktime VR or Java applets doing this. With FlashVR, you can deliver VR to anyone with Flash 6 or higher, so forget about Platform issues and corrupt Java installations.

The software comes with three applications that make up a really nifty toolset. The Flash VR SceneMaker creates the VR files, the FlashVR Hotspotter adds hotspots so that you can jump from movie to movie and the FlashVR ReMapper will convert spherical panoramic images to cylindrical ones. The apps are all developed in Flash and extended using a third party Projector Tool. (Click to read our big comparative review)

Here's a quick test we did:

Click and drag to navigate. Use the Shift and CTRL keys to zoom. Sorry about the not-so-smooth seem.

Notice how smooth the motion is. This is one of these things that just works.
