Milenia Grafter Server

Milenia Grafter Server

Created for use with an upcoming game, MGS is a 64Kbyte Flash media server written and released as Open Source by Milan Toth.

Thanks to Adobe opening up and allowing use of their proprietary protocols, there are several media servers available to Flash developers. Milenia Grafter Server (MGS) is a really small and effective Java based server that offers audio/video/text capabilities. The server is kind of "special purpose" since it's created for a game, but it's well documented and can apparently handle reasonable amounts of users. Milan's site lists a test that had about 800 clients connected. That'll do for many uses, so if you need a lightweight server that can run on any platform that supports Java VM 1.5, this could be worth checking out. The server only implements a bare minimum (i.e. only part of the AMF0 spec) but since it's Open Source, you could possibly extend it to support whatever you need.

Milan also has a couple other projects on his site that's worth checking out, a physics engine (MilGro) and a swarm simulator (MilSwa) that looks like great fun.
