Plugins for the Flash Player?

Ever since Macromedia started developing Central back in 2003, there's been a "hook" in the Flash Player to install software. This feature is used by AIR, Acrobat Connect as well as other Adobe products. Recently it's also been used to install a third party software called Octoshape and this had us a little puzzled, so we though we'd look closer at Octoshape and their deal with Adobe.

There are those Wizards that can make vectors look photo realistic, but it requires an incredible amount of work. The limitations of the vector drawing tools is the problem - you can only do linear or radial gradients. Diffusion Curves is a new technique demonstrated at Adobe's Advanced Technology Labs that looks really impressive and could change your perception of Vector artwork.


Tofino - Flex authoring in MS Visual Studio

Do you use both Flex and Visual Studio in your daily workflow? Tofino is a free plugin that allows you to author Flex content from withing Visual Studio. The plugin allows you to set breakpoints for debugging and Intellisense is next on the list of features to be implemented.


600 job cuts at Adobe

Adobe has announced 600 job cuts throughout the company. The news was buried half way through their recently released Q4 2008 fiscal results. Mike Downey, principal evangelist for the Flash, Flex and AIR products is believed to be one of those laid off as part of the cuts.


Ribbit $100.000 killer app challenge

To get more mindshare with developers, they've now put on a competition with a total of $100k in prizes. A peek at the Flash Player 10 features in Papervision

Ralph Hauwert just released a series of demos featuring the upcoming Flash Player 10 version of Papervision and it sure looks good! 3600 faces with an environment reflection shader that plays at more than 40fps is unheard of with today's engines. This is a nice peak at what's to come and there's more in the pipe!
