Flash on The Beach is just finished, but there's more happening in the conference arena. The Flash community offer smaller, local conferences and if you're in the states nearby Pittsburg, PA, make sure you drop by Flashpitt 08 this week. Two weeks later, Flash User Group Norway puts on a FlexCamp in Oslo.
Flashpitt is a one-day, two track event for multimedia designers, developers, and artists. The conference is being held at the Sheraton Station Square in Pittsburgh and the speaker lineup offers both local and Adobe speakers. Topics cover AIR, After Effects, Papervision 3D, games as well as more business related sessions. This is also an occasion to catch one of the most outspoken female coders, Stacey Mulcahy (also known as The Bitch Who Codes).
Organizer Val Head says "This is the first ever event like this in the area. We decided to put together our own event to fill a void. We realized that Pittsburgh and its surrounding cities don't get enough credit nationally for the amount of work that is done here. Plus, many people don't get to make it to conferences due to the amount of travel involved. Our plan is to bring the inspiring and educational conference experience to the region so everyone here can get the benefit without the big travel commitment."
"The event is being put on by On the Fridge, LLC, which is really just myself and my friend/former co-worker, Joe Kromer. We're heading up all the planning, but we're getting lots of help from the community both in Pittsburgh and in the surrounding area like Colombus. The regional Adobe User Groups have been a great help in getting this all together". Flashpitt08 will happen this Friday, October 10th from 9am to 6pm.
UPDATE: we just heard that the Oslo event has been postponed. Check the FlexCamp Norway site for more info.
FlexCamp Oslo just opened up for registration. FlexCamps are smaller, one day events that focus on Flex, but also the Flash Platform in general. Mihai Corlan, platform evangelist from Adobe Systems will do the keynote and the other sessions are filled by local speakers (including myself). Sessions include using Maven and build systems, functional testing, the RIA landscape, Away3D and realtime 3D in Flash. There will also be an open BarCamp style session with Q&A from the audience.
The camp runs from 1pm to 7pm. Admission is 100NOK but students of the sponsor Norwegian School of Information Technology (NITH) will get in for free by just showing their student pass. The event is being put on by Flash User Group Norway. PS: if the Oslo UG can do this - other smaller User Groups can do this as well!
