Adobe discontinues LiveMotion

For the last 2 months, we have tried to get a comment from Adobe on the future of LiveMotion, but with no luck. They simply did not want to talk about it until now. LiveMotion is officially "dead".

LiveMotion R.I.P. We had guessed this already, but now it is official: Macromedia Flash has no competitors any longer. That is, until Microsoft launches their "FlashKiller", code named "Sparkle", based on the new LongHorn. This is however 2-3 years away.

"Effective November 15, 2003, Adobe will no longer distribute LiveMotion 2.0. Though Adobe has decided to concentrate its efforts in other areas, we want to thank our loyal LiveMotion customers for their support. Adobe will maintain person-to-person technical support for LiveMotion until March 31, 2004. In addition, complimentary technical support will be available until further notice via the Adobe Support Knowledgebase and User to User Forums on the Adobe Web site."

There was immediately reactions to this in the LiveMotion forums at Adobeforums.com. LiveMotion user Aeolius said "Since Adobe is essentially forcing me to learn Flash, as I reluctantly abandon LiveMotion, I feel the time is right, to leave GoLive behind as well."
One cannot blame the team creating LiveMotion for this. They really did a great job, but when the Adobe press department don't even care about sending out a review version, you really cannot expect much press coverage. The program was really good, but we got our review copy 3 months after the launch and by then it was old news.

We must admit that we feel that Adobe has become way too "snobbish" for their own good when they don't even care to give comments to press. This is only one thing in a trend we have seen with Adobe reperesentatives the latest years. They take their audience for granted and this may very well be their downfall. We've heard this from colleagues in print media too, so unless Adobe (ADBE) sharpens up, don't invest your spare change there.
