Amazing compression from Optimaze!

The UK based company IdeaWorks3D has been working for years on a compression tool that compresses SWF files, and with the help of the 3D/Flash tool company Electric Rain they have finally released their product

Optimaze! has been demonstrated for us on several occations, and we have been equally amazed everytime we saw it in action - but we were beginning to think that IdeaWorks3D would live up to the Vaporware award they recived for their tool. I guess they need to give the award back now, because the tool has been made available through Electric Rain in the USA (http:// www.optimaze.us/)

What Optimaze! does is basically to simplify and compress the vector graphics in the SWF files. And it does a good job. Usualy the file size of the SWFs end up being reduced 30-40% compared to the original according to IdeaWorks3D. They claim to have seen compressions of up to 70% in certain tests and with no singnificant losses in animation quality.

Optimaze! has a Flash MX user interface, optimizes SWFs from Flash 3,4,5 and MX. In fact, it will optimize any SWF files from any SWF-exporting applications, such as Swift 3D. And it imports the SWFs directly so you don't need the FLA to do the optimization. Optimaze is currently only available for Windows, but if there is enough interest in a Mac version, they will concider to ship it for Mac too.

Its important to understand that Optimaze! is a vector compression tool, it will not compress/optimize your SWFs if your only content is video, audio, or JPEGs, infact it does not do any bitmap compression.

The vector optimization tool is being sold for US $129, a price that might seem a little steep at first for a product that just does a couple of things. But if you have ever worked on getting the size down on your Flash animations you know that it will be paid for the first time you use it when it deliveres 30-40% compression almost at a click of a button.
