AS2Unit

AS2Unit is an open-source testing framework for Actionscript 2, developed by Edinburgh based consultancy iteration::two.

With the iminent release of Flash MX 2004, Macromedia has finally delivered on its promise of Rich Internet Application (RIA) development. Over the next few months we're going to hear a lot more about software engineering theory as we discover the best ways to build these applications.

Unit testing is a common practice in Agile Development. Alistair McLeod explains: "The development of the AS2Unit testing framework allows us to extend this philosophy of test-driven design to Rich Internet Application development. This framework was borne of necessity - once a developer has been disciplined to develop in a test-first manner, the absence of a unit-testing framework proves disconcerting. Our own development team drove the demand for AS2Unit, however we are delighted to offer the framework to the development community, under an open-source license agreement."

If all this new terminology is getting a little much for you then don't worry, help is at hand! FlashMagazine is delighted to announce that Steven and Alistair from iteration:two will be contributing a regular column entitled 'Engineering Rich Internet Applications', to help introduce you to the best practices in application development.

As2Unit is due for release following the availability of Flash MX 2004 and Flash MX 2004 Professional.
