Macromedia Central public beta is out

This morning, Macromedia released the public beta of the long awaited Central. Installation is amazingly easy and the app looks good.

The beta version comes with two applications: a weather app that covers the world and a US only MovieFinder that lets you locate movies and read info on them. The most important feature of the application, the Appfinder, is not working in this beta.

Installing Central is amazingly easy. You just come across Central enabled Flash content and a dialogue opens asking if you want to install the program. Click Yes and a progress bar is displayed, showing download progress. When the download is complete, an installation program opens, installs and Central starts for the first time. It's really that easy. (Only quirk we found was that clicking the question-mark in the dialogue interupted our download rather than open a new window).

Central pops up on your screen as two separate windows. One is the Central application and the other one is a window for application notices. This is in fact a bit annoying. Every time you open up Central, you have to close two windows. We'd suggest the smaller notice window be kept hidden until there really is something in it? It's also a bit annoying that the app doesn't appear to be able to detect if an internet connection is available (You have to turn this on/off manually). This should be a native function of the program itself that programmers could poll to check.

This does indeed look promising. We can't wait to see the developer Beta and what possibilities it will open to us.
