Book review: The Focal Easy Guide to Flash MX 2004

The Focal Easy Guide to Flash MX 2004 is a great little beginner's guide to working with Flash MX 2004. It provides a comprehensive visual guide to the user interface and a general introduction to the functionality.

TITLE: The Focal Easy Guide to Flash MX 2004
PUBLISHER: Focal Press
ISBN: 0-240-51959-0
PAGES: 213 colour
CD: No
AUTHORS: Brigetta Hosea

This is an absolutely great book for designers starting out with Flash. Although the cover says 'for new users and professionals', what they really mean is professional designers and animators. It isn't a book for programmers (you won't learn much Actionscript here) but you will gain a thoroughly comprehensive introduction Flash's graphical capabilities and features.

After getting to grips with the user interface the various topics covered include, methods of drawing and animating, working with audio and video and a couple of chapters on designing for multiple media. The layout is colourful and informative and absolutely filled with screenshots.

One feature not to be underestimated when you are learning is that unlike most Flash tomes, this one will fit in your pocket. At only 148 X 210 mm you'll be able to easily read it on the move.

The book has a clear visual style that will appeal to designers, and despite looking like a book to pass your driving test, the Focal Easy Guide to Flash MX 2004 is a great visual guide for designers getting started with Flash MX 2004.
